About the artowrk...The Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles, 1991
Acrylic on canvas, tie dyed, pieced fabric border, 74 x 80 inches, Private Collection
About the artist... Faith Ringgold is an artist and a writer. In her paintings she combines painting, quilted fabric and storytelling.
Her connections with VanGogh... I know that Vincent VanGogh also paints sunflowers. I also know that many other artists like to duplicate and reinvent his pictures.
Some other things i found out is... Arles, where the paintingtakes place is a town south of France. It is an ancient town.
My thoughts on the painting... I think that it is possible that the family is telling a story while making the quilt. Faith Ringgold is famous for combinding storytelling into her paintings so the quilt might represent a story being told from the family of all girls. Also if you look on the border edge you see a quilt on the outside of the painting. This could be like a story about a story.
Some questions to keep you thinking... Why is the painting of all girls except for the man bringing in sunflowers? Do you think the sunflowers could be representing anything? If you look close at the backround and setting what do you notice? Is there a reson that the ladies are out in the middle of a sunflower field? What do ou think about the stroy as a whole? Do you think anything in the picture could be portraying something else?
